Three employees from Northeastern Junior College who have been successful in initiating and receiving grant funding on various recent campus projects were recognized during the college’s spring 2010 in-service activities.
Brenda Lauer, a business professor and head of the business department was recognized for a grant she wrote and received from the Piton Foundation which is sponsoring the Tax Help Colorado program. As part of NJC’s participation in this grant, accounting students were able to enroll in two classes which provided them the knowledge and credentials to be able to complete income tax forms for the public. The Tax Help Colorado program is running on campus through the first week of April. Low-income and elderly with household incomes less than $49,000 may access this free tax preparation service.
Misti Lauer, director of the college’s Adult Basic Education programming was successful in receiving a Temple Hoyne Buell grant which is being used to support family literacy programming in her department.
Celeste Delgado –Pelton, professor of music, successfully secured grant dollars from the Rundus Foundation, plus an anonymous private donor, to be able to purchase some special new pianos for the music laboratory.
Each of these grants were secured with the help of Gail Laforce, who does the actual grant writing for Northeastern Junior College. All employees on campus are encouraged to find grant opportunities and to pursue them on behalf of their departments and students. A number of other grant applications are currently in the works and the college is hopeful to receive a number of these other awards in the months to come.
