Richard Gentile named dean for math, science, and public service at CCA

AURORA, COLO.–Richard J. Gentile, Jr., has been appointed Dean of Instruction for Math, Science, and Public Service at the Community College of Aurora. Gentile, who also will oversee the college’s renowned Center for Simulation, started work at CCA July 5.

Gentile comes to CCA from Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, where he was the Senior Associate Dean for the School of Health, Wellness, and Public Safety, overseeing its public safety, legal studies, and physical fitness programs. In that position, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of a department with more than 100 faculty members educating nearly 2,500 students.

Gentile brings to the college extensive experience in higher education. Prior to his most recent position at Central New Mexico Community College, Gentile was Associate Dean of the School of Health, Wellness and Public Safety, Department of Allied Health Sciences, where he developed and supervised 14 certificate and degree programs. Before that, he oversaw respiratory therapy programs for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute and was responsible for organization, administration, curriculum development, and overall evaluation of the programs. He has health care experience as a respiratory therapy education director, clinical instructor, staff therapist, and equipment technician.

Gentile was given the Certificate of Appreciation for Professional Leadership and Service from the New Mexico Higher Education Assessment Association in 2001 and has received numerous other awards for his leadership and service. He also served in numerous appointed and elected positions in the New Mexico Society for Respiratory Care, including a year as president of the state professional association and chair of the state licensing board.

He holds a master of education degree from the University of Houston, a graduate certificate in Allied Health Education and Administration from Baylor College of Medicine, a bachelor of science degree from Georgia State University and an associate in applied science from Milwaukee Area Technical College, both in respiratory therapy.
