Math Day for Girls’ at CCA aims to launch STEM-related careers

Engineering will be the theme Friday as CCA hosts its fifth-annual Math Day for Girls event from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m at the CentreTech campus.

The event is designed to promote mathematics and STEM-related professions to area high school girls, exposing them to careers they may never before have considered.

The 2012 Math Day overall will include: interaction with professional women in a conference setting; a career panel; keynote speaker Sarah Law, a senior systems engineer at Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems; and a hands-on project in which students will design, build and modify a propulsion vehicle, which will be launched and judged per predetermined criteria.

This year 80 hand-picked seniors from Aurora Public Schools will be mentored by a large contingent of professional engineers from Raytheon, Aurora Water and other companies.

Previous Math Days have touched upon potential careers involving health care, maps and satellites and weather.
