(Denver, CO) Lepricano Day, a celebration of Irish and Mexican solidarity, will be Friday, March 16, 2012, starting with the book sale at 4:30p.m. Events will take place at the former Casa Mayan Restaurant, 1020 9th St., on the Ninth Street Historic Park on the Auraria Campus. This first annual event is sponsored by Auraria Casa Mayan Heritage with support from Community College of Denver’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Performances start at 5:15p.m. and include Los San Patricios! by Romero Dance Troupe and Mexico’s Irish Mother by Melissa Pear. Presentations follow with Auraria’s Latino and Irish Band, Gregorio Alcaro, Trini H. Gonzalez, and James McNally; Peter O Brian-Irish Pioneer by Peter W. Willis; and Denver Irish Secret Night Life by Hannah Herron. A book signing for Irish Denver, by Thomas Noel, Dennis Gallagher, and James P. Walsh, will follow.
The original Auraria community was founded in 1858 and is Denver’s oldest continuously occupied settlement. An immigrant community, Auraria was home to many Irish and Mexican immigrants who lived peacefully together and developed a unique culture. Lepricano Day will celebrate the bond between the Irish and Mexicans who were early settlers in the region.
Auraria Casa Mayan Heritage was created to promote Denver’s early Auraria settlement and the legendary Casa Mayan restaurant and cultural center, now preserved on the Ninth Street Historic Park, a national historic landmark on Auraria’s tri-institutional campus.
Lepricano Day is free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended; call Greg at 303.477.9220 or email@example.com. Donations will be appreciated.
