LAMAR CC NURSING EARNS NATIONAL ACCREDITATION

(Lamar, Colorado, April 4, 2012) On Monday, April 2nd, the Lamar Community College Nursing Department received official notification that it has received accreditation with the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC). The NLNAC Board of Commissioners granted the program initial accreditation for five years. In the notice, the NLNAC also recognized LCC’s strength under Standard 1: Mission and Administrative Capacity – Leadership in securing partnerships and grant funding that directly support the nursing program.

“I am happy to hear of the NLNAC’s decision to grant LCC’s Nursing Program national accreditation. This is a significant achievement by the Nursing Program and its staff and faculty. It is also an indicator on the caliber of program we have,” commented LCC President John Marrin. “The accreditation process has required considerable professional development on the part of each nursing faculty member. Sandy Summers and our faculty members have gone out of their way to earn professional teaching credentials, and in doing so, have improved the quality of our program exponentially.”

LCC’s accreditation process included an intensive self-study and improvement plan owned by nursing faculty and staff. LCC Nursing faculty and staff include Sandy Summers, DNP, FNP-BC; Kathy Henderson, MSN, ANP; Mary Ann Turner, MSN-E, Nancy Winsor, MSN-E; and Nursing Admission Coordinator, Mary Lou Myers.

An NLNAC site review team visited the LCC campus last September. At the conclusion of the visit, the team reported that LCC and the Nursing program had met or exceeded expectations in all six standards related to excellence in the areas of mission and administrative capacity, faculty & staff, students, curriculum, resources, and outcomes.

Not surprisingly, LCC’s Nursing graduates have been successful as well. In December, the LCC Nursing Department announced its National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) pass rates for its 2011 class. With a 92.31% pass rate, LCC surpassed the national average (87.49%) for the third year in a row.
