LITTLETON, Colo. (Feb. 22, 2013) – Arapahoe Community College Automotive Technology student Shane Sims has earned first place in the District SkillsUSA competition for the second consecutive year and will represent the College at the 2013 Colorado SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference this April at WarrenTech in Lakewood.

A total of 27 ACC Automotive Technology students participated in the District SkillsUSA competition on Feb. 13 at Arapahoe Community College. The competition, which was broken down into two groups (first-year and second-year students), was comprised of five stations, including: engine performance, electrical, heating and air conditioning, manual transmissions and brakes. A pair of second-year students, Sims and Brian Hall, recorded perfect scores at each station. Sims and Hall proceeded to compete in an additional three-station diagnostic tie breaker to determine the winner, with Sims prevailing.

Sims, who earned a first-place medal at the 2012 Colorado SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference, went on to garner fifth place at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference last summer.

Brian Gardner won the first-year student competition with a score of 43/50. Gardner will be one of six ACC students who will be vying to join Sims – by virtue of testing in – at this year’s Colorado SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference.
