LITTLETON, Colo. (Mar. 7, 2013) – Arapahoe Community College’s Sigma Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has received ‘Five Star Chapter’ recognition for the 2012-13 school year, as announced during the Phi Theta Kappa Colorado Regional Conference on Mar. 1-2 at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs.

Sigma Phi also garnered an ‘Honors in Action – Theme 10’ award during the event, and Dr. Erica Hastert – Sigma Phi’s faculty advisor – received a Horizon Award.

ACC students Joseph Brady, Oliver Brainerd, Rasheed Abdullah Graham, Aaron Rauscher and Michael Smith all attended the Colorado Regional Conference with Hastert. Rauscher, who is the President of Sigma Phi, is currently running for Phi Theta Kappa’s International Vice President of Division IV. ACC student Dorothy Mighell, who served as President of Sigma Phi in the spring of 2012, facilitated the two-day event as Phi Theta Kappa’s Regional Vice President of Leadership.

Phi Theta Kappa’s Five Star Chapter development plan serves as a blueprint for developing strong chapters, improving student engagement on campus and recognizing progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter. Using the Five Star plan as a guide, chapters enhance their strategies to recognize eligible students, provide significant personal and professional development opportunities for members (through Honors in Action), and build a working relationship with college administration by becoming active on campus and in the community. As chapters reach these milestones, they progress through each level of the Five Star plan, ultimately reaching the pinnacle Five Star level.

Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges, is the largest honor society in American higher education. The Sigma Phi Chapter at ACC was chartered in 1968 and has inducted more than 3,500 members since its inception. Sigma Phi has retained its ‘Five Star Chapter’ status for over 15 years.
