LAKEWOOD, CO – Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) recently partnered with Denver-based Piton Foundation to provide free tax preparation assistance through the Tax Help Colorado program. From February 1 through March 5, IRS-certified RRCC students prepared and e-filed tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $50,000 a year.
Students at the Red Rocks site prepared 311 returns, resulting in federal refunds of $615,452. Accounting faculty Danielle Scholl and Janet Tarase coordinated RRCC’s site and oversaw the work of the students.
“We are so proud of our team,” said Tarase. “My colleagues and I watched our students grow both in intellect and confidence. Students who started out hesitant became true professionals working with taxpayers one-on-one to calculate the most beneficial tax results.”
Tarase explained that the students became certified by the IRS to prepare individual tax returns, and some earned additional advanced certifications on quality review, health savings plans, and debt cancellations. In addition to new skills, the participating students will receive a letter of gratitude from Governor Hickenlooper for their dedication to the Tax Help Colorado Program.
Tax Help Colorado has a presence on 19 college campuses and operates 28 free tax sites statewide. More than 30% of Colorado families are eligible to participate in the program, which was created to help alleviate the financial burden of tax preparation on families that are striving to achieve financial stability.
