There are many tax preparation services to choose from, but to find one operated by teenagers is rather rare. At Aurora Central High School, however, a group of students ran a successful tax return preparation site this tax season, right on school grounds.
The students are concurrently enrolled at the Community College of Aurora where they earned Advanced IRS Volunteer Tax Certification upon completion of an accredited income tax preparation course. Through the Tax Help Colorado program, the students prepared returns for low-income earners in their community free of charge. More notably, they sacrificed many of their Saturday mornings and afternoons to do so.
Community members kept the site bustling as clients, but they weren’t the only ones interested in paying the students a visit. Representatives of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) decided to show up unannounced one day. After examining the students’ work for accuracy and quality, the IRS determined the site to be in 100% compliance with federal regulations.
APS is very proud of each student involved in the Tax Help Colorado program for being such vital assets to the community.
